Exploring Research Practice & Skill

Every year, Doctoral College welcomes participants leaving school and from universities around the world to study for 2 or 12 weeks in June, July and August. We offer these participants the opportunity to experience the UK and investigate higher education and to study specialists subjects such as Business & Management for MBA students and Research Practice & Skills for students wishing to pursue a doctorate all focused on career development from the learning and experience gained in the UK. Through our portfolio of immersive career experiences, participants benefit from an agreed period of hands-on experience alongside top industry professionals, enabling them to make the right career decisions and maximise their potential.

Teaching Advancement

We have a variety of online, inquiry based learning courses – available for Academic Staff Development which are designed to help teachers to develop an inquiry based approach to teaching. They learn how to flip the responsibility in lessons from the tutor teaching to the students’ learning, and recognise the importance of linking learning to student’s needs and interests.

Career Development

While the word ‘psychometric’ sounds overly technical, it simply defines ways of ‘measuring’ the mind. The concept has also been around longer than some may realise. Psychometric research has been around since the late 19th Century. One of the first examples was the University of Cambridge’s psychometric lab, which studied subjects’ memories, reactions, and attention spans.

When it comes to hiring, psychometric tests can be used to measure an array of skills and attributes, from critical reasoning, verbal and mathematical ability to emotional intelligence and soft skills such as communication and time management.

Research Enhancement

This short course aims to provide students with an understanding of the purpose and appropriate use of qualitative research methods. The course is intended to be both practical and accessible and aims to equip students with the skills to undertake their own qualitative research. Course tutors will provide examples from their own work to illustrate the application of qualitative research in the mental health field. Different theoretical approaches to data collection and analysis will be explored, including the Grounded Theory approach and Interpretative Phenomenological Analysis. Methods to be described will include individual interviews, focus group discussions, observation and content and thematic analysis.

Meet the Director

Professor Oliver is the Managing Director and CEO of Doctoral College UK. He has over 20 years of senior management experience in global higher education including roles as a Deputy Pro Vice-Chancellor, Executive Dean, Director of School, Head of Department, and Head of Research Institute. Professor Oliver has also experience, knowledge, and skills, as a Quality Assurance Reviewer for the UK Government Quality Assurance Agency (QAA) for Higher Education and as a Quality Assurance Verifier for the Office of Qualifications and Examinations Regulation (Ofqual).
