Master of Research (MRes)

Reasons to study for an MREs

A Masters in Research (MRes) is never a one-size-fits-all endeavour, but it offers advantages to all who earn the qualification. Researchers across the world pursue research education for a variety of reasons, both personal and professional. Knowing some of these reasons can help you determine if you’re ready to take this next step! Whether you’re looking to expand your knowledge or work your way towards a PhD, here are a few reasons applicants begin their MRes journey.

1. Fulfilling an Internal Yearning

For most people who study MRes, there’s an internal yearning for what is next in research for them. Oliver (2006) advocates that on many occasions, academics see studying for an MRes as a personal challenge, that drives them to do more, and that there comes a time in their career when they ask themselves; What is next for me, How can I challenge myself to enhance my capability, and how can I improve my research capabilities.

2. Responding to a Desire to Research

In research, there is an inherent value in being a lifelong learner, and in studying for an MRes, there is also a focus on practising what you learn and enhancing your research capabilities. Researchers are expected to work from a place of expertise as they develop a vision to direct their research projects. Such researchers choose to earn their MRes in order to raise their level of expertise. They also understand that having an MRes gives them greater credibility as they advance in their careers.

3. Accessing Career Advancement and Opportunities

Normally most MRes students come with at least some research experience, whether it be as a classroom teacher, an administrator, or from business / industry and all are looking to grow professionally. Having an earned MRes is desirable for researchers and opens doors for career advancement and doctoral studies, it does so because it represents a significant personal investment and commitment to develop research capabilities. Professionally, the content, skills, and teamworking gained in an MRes further prepare the student for career advancement for the future.
